What love teaches us

"We only part to meet again" - John Gay

16.02.2024.

Thank you GeeGee, for the last 14 years.

You have brought enormous joy to our family.

I’ll see you on the flip side.

****

I lost my dog Gege that friday night.

It felt like it’s been an eternity ever since.

I flew home that Friday morning and landed in Hong Kong friday afternoon.

As soon as the plane landed, I ran off the plane, through customs, through baggage collection and got on a cab.

Then I rushed to the hospital.

When I finally arrived, I was bracing myself for the inevitable.

There are times in life you need to brace yourself emotionally for the what’s about to happen.

It doesn’t lessen the pain that follows, but it helps you in the moment to prepare yourself for the worst.

This was one of them.

I took a deep breath and I went in.

When I went into the consultation room, I saw my dad, my mum, my brother and his girlfriend surrounding Gege.

I put down my bags and went to him straight away.

As I pet his soft fur, I whispered into Gee’s ears, “I’m back baby, I’m back, I’m here”.

I kissed him on his forehead for 100 times that night.

Within a second, I bursted into tears.

The last time I saw him was a year ago, never did I expect to say goodbye to him so soon.

I thought I had more time with him, to take him out for car rides, to cafes, on walks.

But there is never enough time with our loved ones.

That is why we should cherish our time with family, and people who matter to us.

Because time we have with our family is limited, it lessens every year.

I don’t mean to say this to scare you, but with every loss, every goodbye, it makes every moment with loved ones, more precious.

Losing Gee has made me realized that…

1.Nothing is more important than family.

Nothing.

You may fight, argue, disagree, bicker with family…

But at the end of the day, you are each other’s support, you be with each other through life’s hardest moments.

That is how you get through them.

There is nothing more precious than the love between family.

Family time is precious and you should cherish it.

2. “We only part to meet again.” - John Gay

This was a great quote I saw on the day of Gee’s funeral ceremony.

I believe that we all reunite with our loved ones one day when we pass on.

I’m choosing to believe that Gee is waiting for me and my family up there.

I’m choosing to be grateful and happy that I got to be with him until the very end rather than clinging on to the regret of not spending enough time with him.

I’m choosing to believe Gee is running up there, playing, eating, chewing and barking, rather than clinging onto the pain of losing him.

It doesn’t ease the pain, but it’s a start.

Everything in life is about balance, nothing ever gets rid of our pain completely.

But we can start by reframing our mindset, thoughts and attitudes around it.

3.There is never enough time, which makes every little moment more precious

Time with family is limited.

Priortize and cherish every moment.”

Final thoughts.

Frankly speaking, I was worried about writing this newsletter.

Because I was afraid it’d be too personal.

But the truth is, I’d be more afraid to hide, to pretend this didn’t affect me.

Instead, I’m choosing to write about this honestly so I can share what I learn when life gives me a hard time.
