Curiosity is a pandora's box

Curiosity is a gift.

But curiosity is also a pandora’s box.

Depending on the context.

If you have been following my Newsletters, you know this is the perspective I offer here. I like to address both sides of the story for a holistic truth.

In a world full of quick fixes and conflicting truths, I believe the merit and value in being holistic and critical.

My goal here for you is to increase your self awareness, to help you be more open-minded to the world and the information you are consuming on a daily basis.

Remember that not everyone interprets the world in the same way as you.

We all have lens that are in accordance to our values, experiences and beliefs.

We can be in the same situation but have very different interpretations of what it meant to us.

Think about it.

If we all thought and saw the world in the same way…

There would be no wars, conflicts, differences in culture, personalities and perspectives.

No arguments.

That is the beauty of differences.

That is the beauty of us, we are all unique and there is only one you.

So learn to appreciate your own differences and your own lens.

As long as it doesn’t hinder you from living your life.

Same goes for curiosity.

Curiosity applied to personal growth & business, will help you flourish and evolve.

Curiosity applied to unclear and blurry boundaries in relationships, will destroy you.

“Curiosity is a pandora’s box”. - Me

Sometimes you don’t need the whole truth.

Sometimes you don’t want to know the whole truth.

Sometimes you can’t handle the truth.

Be careful with what you look for.

Be careful with what you wish for.

Be careful with what you choose to focus on.

Because the truth can ruin you.

But the truth can also set you free.

Especially when you speak your own truth.

*

On the other hand:

When the undesired truth is revealed, there is no turning back.

No going back to being clueless.

That is why people say ignorance is bliss (sometimes).

That is why some people choose to stay ignorant.

Some people choose to prescribe to an easier system of Black & White, so they don’t have to deal with the unknown.

Sometimes what you don’t know can’t hurt you.

Because once you know, you are forced to be reckon with.

Forced to take responsibility for the truth.

And the truth is a huge burden to bare.

**

I tell my clients, readers, family and friends that everything needs to be in moderation.

Everything is a double edge sword, depending on which end of the spectrum you are at.

Too little or too much of something is detrimental, no matter what it is.

Now let’s discuss the beauty and the downside of curiosity.

***

The beauty of curiosity

  • Questioning why you get triggered by conflict

  • Reflecting on your experiences with conflict

  • Thinking back to how your parents dealt with conflict and how it affect your ability to deal with conflict

  • Identifying patterns within your experiences of conflict with people

  • Identifying the outcomes of you dealing with conflict - was it positive or negative?

  • Pondering on how your upbringing has contributed to your avoidance with conflict

  • Thinking about how your fear of conflict has affected your relationships with people in the past and present

The downside of curiosity

  • Asking questions you don’t want the answers to

  • Finding out the truth that you know will hurt you - At times things are better left unsaid.

  • At times, honesty may not always be the best policy especially when you know it will deeply hurt someone you care about (again, this is context dependent)

Don’t forget to take this in with a grain of salt.

My intention here is not for you to take one side or piece and treat it as the absolute truth.

My intention for these letters is to encourage you to endlessly question yourself, your surroundings, what you have been told, what you think you ‘should’ do.

This is so you can live a fulfilling life with holistic ways of seeing everything.

Because your mind is your perspective. It is your lens to the world.

It is how you consume information, encode it, process it and store it.

Treat your mind and your lens with love, compassion, patience and don’t forget to always question things.
